Don't be afraid of built-ins
Updated: Apr 22
I have found when speaking to my clients that built-ins can be a scary word. Adding an actual feature to your home can seem very permanent and expensive. But there is no need to be afraid. Adding a built-in can add a lot of character to your house that can be difficult to achieve with just furniture. Also you can use them to add or change something that you don't care for in your home.
I was in love with our home when we moved in even though it needed some work. There was one particular eye sore that was the fireplace. It looked like it belonged in a Colorado home not our suburban home with arched windows and white trim.
We first looked into taking this fireplace down and rebuilding a completely new mantle. We didn't realize how much structural work that would take so when we got the quote back at $16,000 we quickly needed to change directions.
We realized that we didn't need to remove the existing fireplace but just build around it. We would be able to pull up the concrete stone on the floor (total hazard when you have young kids) and lay quartz down flat to make a more even surface. We asked around and found a carpenter who was willing to do the project for us.
It took him 3 days and a little over $3,000 to create the piece below. We are thrilled with how it turned out and really love what it has done to the space.
